Callias
had the reputation of being both a successful warrior (at the Battle of Marathon)
and athlete (at the ancient olympics he thrice won the chariot race). He
was also renowned for his wealth being a member of one of the richest Athenian
families (his father in particular was considered the richest man in
Athens). The playwright
Aristophanes in Birds portrays him as leading a lewd and careless
way of life. Part of the message here, then, may be that not only won't money
buy you love but it won't get you knowledge (in particular, regarding moral
virtue) either!
