The oppressive
government which replaced the democracy at the end of
the Peloponnesian War forced the supporters of
the deposed regime into exile for fear of their lives. Both
Chaerephon and Anytus,
one of Socrates' accusers, were among them though
Socrates himself remained in
Athens (and almost lost his life because of it).
Less than a year later this dreaded Rule of the Thirty was overthrown and
the democrats returned in triumph.
