Cleruchs

==================================================

When settlers, in this case Athenian settlers, retained their citizenship while colonizing elsewhere in the Greek world, they were known as cleruchs and their colony was called a cleruchy. Cleruchs were often from among the poorest citizens. They were given a parcel of land in return for military service in the colony. This assured their loyalty and gave the home city-state influence both in and over the colonized region.
