Image of Dionysus

Dionysus is the Olympian god of the vine, wine, and emotional religion.

He is the son of Zeus and Semele by way of a most interesting genesis. Hera, always the jealous wife of Zeus, tricked Semele into asking Zeus to appear before her in "all his glory." Hera knew full well that the lightening of Zeus would prove fatal to Semele. Zeus, so taken by Semele that he foolishly promised to grant her every wish, sadly complied and inadvertently burned her to death!

All was not lost, however. Zeus removed the six month old fetus that Semele carried in her womb and "transplanted" it into his thigh. At the appointed time, a healthy son was born! He was named Dionysus which means twice-born.
