The current Parthenon was built under Pericles in the fifth
century B.C.E. and stands on the foundations of an earlier version of the
temple. It is a marble structure and was dedicated to the city's patron goddess,
Athena. At one time, a huge statue of Athena stood on a pedestal outside
the building. As you can see in these pictures, much of her original beauty
and glory remain today despite the ravages of time.
