Like Simmias, Cebes heralded from Thebes and,
earlier in his life, followed the Pythagorean,
Philolaus. Later, he became a student of Socrates.
He plays a role in this dialogue and in Plato's
Phaedo. His wealth, along with that of
Simmias and Crito,
is more than enough to bribe the jailers and secure a safe passage for
Socrates. If, of course,
Socrates agrees to the escape.
