Thessaly is an area of Greece situated north northeast of
Athens. Crito has friends
who live in Thessaly and he urges Socrates to
flee to their protection. For Socrates, however,
Thessaly is a relatively uncivilized place, full of lawlessness and disorder.
It is a good place for raising horses, but the human focus is on eating and
drinking! (If this doesn't sound so bad, consider how removed you may be
from the belief that Socrates holds, it is in
intellectual conversation, not in bodily pleasure, that we reach
our greatest happiness!)
